Horizontal Boring CNC Machining

The Horizontal Boring section comprises 1 Union machine, 3 Giddings & Lewis machines. An extensive range of tooling and ancillary equipment is available including, Multi Angled Milling Head, Facing & Contouring Heads, Out-Facing Bars and a Speed Multiplier to give a maximum spindle speed of 8,700 rpm. The machines cover an envelope of some 2.4 x 2.1 metres with a maximum table load of 10 tonnes. One machine is fitted with Renishaw Probing to enable accurate datuming of complex parts.

Giddings & Lewis G40-rtx Production Horizontal Boring CNC Machining

State of the art high power machine installed late 1996 with tool changing capable of the CH8 contouring head and up to 45kgs. The machine has a full 360,000 incremental “B” rotary axis with radial & helical milling capability. The other options are Renishaw probing, thermally controlled headstock cooling, high pressure & high volume coolant through the spindle. The machine is fully guarded to comply with CE regulations. Machine envelope is X-axis 2440mm, Y-axis, 2135 & Z-axis 1550mm max table weight 11 tonnes. This machine can use all outfacing equipment.

Giddings & Lewis PC40-T Production Horizontal Boring CNC Machining

Production centre for heavy milling, precision boring, drilling and tapping, and two or three axis contouring operations. This extremely precise Production Centre features independent electronic servo drives, infinitely variable speed and feed headstock and 1220 x 1830 mm air lift rotary table with the CNC 8000B control and Numeriprobe gauging system which allows for the probing of work piece features. Headstock travel on column 2135mm. Cross travel 2440mm. It is also capable of using CH16 and CH8 CNC contouring heads. Supplemented with a range of ZX type Outfacing boring bars from 2” to 9” flow bore capacities and all ancillary equipment for our PC40 as below.

 
Giddings & Lewis PC 40 Production Horizontal Borer
Full 4 axis CNC 800 Numeripath control. Fitted with auxiliary CNC contouring head with the capability of taper boring and threading etc. Lubricool refrigeration plant enables extended top spindle rev's without thermal distortion. Constant 40 hp DC drive. Large 2440mm cross travel, 1830mm vertical and longitudinal traverses. Machine is equipped with right angle milling boring heads & universal milling boring heads.
 
 
Union TC110 Production Horizontal Borer
This new model machine is the 1st in production in the UK at this high specification. Full 5 axis Heidenhain TNC 430M control. Fitted with tool changeable Davis 8” CNC contouring head with the capability of taper boring and threading etc. 60 tool ATC, 4000 rpm spindle & High pressure coolant thro’ spindle system. Constant 35 hp AC drive. Large 2000 mm cross travel, 1500 mm vertical and longitudinal traverses. Machine is equipped with a full CNC rotary table resolving to 0.001 degree for positioning & radial milling. Recently fitted with an EIMELDINGEN “table on table” full rotary “a” axis for contouring and positioning.

Seat Pocket Machining using Outfacing Bars 

 

The drawings below illustrate a typical Tree Shape Oil Valve Body. There are four valves seat pockets @ 6.38” Dia and one @ 4.25” Dia with a total valve body length of 70”.

Stud type outfacing heads, bore valve seat pockets and piloted type outfacing heads are used to machine out the valve seat pockets.

A small stub type outfacing head is used to machine the smaller valve seat pocket.
